The best vegan protein sources in India, ranked honestly
The AORAH Atelier · Published · 6 min

Soya chunks are the most protein dense everyday vegan food in India at about 52 grams per 100 grams raw, followed by hemp seeds, peanuts, lentils, almonds and chickpeas. Quinoa is lower per 100 grams but is notable because it contains all nine essential amino acids.
How to read the chart
These values are for raw or dry weight and are approximate; they come from USDA FoodData Central style data. Cooked foods absorb water, so a cooked cup of lentils or quinoa carries far less protein per 100 grams than the dry figure suggests.
Building an Indian vegan day
- Breakfast: moong chilla, besan cheela, or oats with seeds
- Lunch: dal with rice or roti, plus a legume side such as chana
- Snack: roasted chana, nuts, or a considered bar
- Dinner: soya, tofu or rajma with whole grains
Do you need to combine proteins at every meal?
The old rule that every meal must pair complementary proteins has been relaxed. Research summaries note that the body draws on a shared amino acid pool across the day, so eating a variety of sources over the day is enough.
Quinoa, millets and chocolate
Quinoa reportedly contains all nine essential amino acids, though its balance is better described as nearly complete: see this Frontiers in Nutrition review. It is why we use it, with millets and hazelnut, in the 36% Protein.
Other nutrients to plan for
A sports nutrition review flags vitamin B12, iron, zinc, calcium, iodine and vitamin D as nutrients that need deliberate planning on a vegan diet. Fortified foods or supplements usually cover B12. How much protein you need depends on you: see how much protein you need.
Variety is the cheapest protein strategy there is.
